We Are Now Accepting All Applications for the Naturopathic Medicine Program

Good news for prospective ND students:

We are now accepting all applications to the Bastyr University naturopathic medicine program for fall 2012. We anticipate offering the naturopathic medicine program at both our current location in Kenmore, Washington, and at our new location in San Diego, California. Immediately upon receiving accreditation approval of our San Diego campus, we will notify all applicants.

Bastyr's New ND Curriculum in One Graph

Bastyr's naturopathic medicine program will offer a revamped curriculum in fall 2012 at both the Kenmore and San Diego campuses. The change reduces classroom hours and gives students clinical training earlier in their education (more background). Here's a summary of what it looks like:

International Students and the San Diego Campus

Will international students be able to study at the San Diego campus?

We do not have federal approval to enroll international students at the San Diego campus in fall 2012. We continue to welcome international students to apply to our Kenmore campus, and we anticipate securing approval to enroll international students in San Diego in fall 2013.

Learn More About Bastyr in California Oct. 15 at California ND Association Conference

If you live near Newport Beach in California and would like to learn more about Bastyr University, you're invited to attend the Bastyr University Information Session on Oct. 15 at the California Naturopathic Doctors Association conference.

Deb Lantz, ND, associate dean for the School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University, will be the featured speaker at this admissions event, but attendees also will have the opportunity to learn more about naturopathic medicine as guests of the conference. Following Dr. Lantz's presentation, you're invited to attend the evening session and reception.

Yes, admissions scholarship funds will be available in the same way for both campuses, on a limited basis as funds are available.

What is the Facility Like?

The Bastyr San Diego building encompasses approximately 19,300 square feet divided into two floors, with ample classroom space. The building’s design and zoning allow the University to carry out laboratory and clinical education in the future without major infrastructure investments or extensive permitting. How to Apply

When can I apply to the San Diego naturopathic medicine program?

For Kenmore campus programs, we opened our online application system for fall 2012 on September 1, 2011.

For the San Diego naturopathic medicine program, we will begin accepting applications once we receive final approval from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. To contact admissions regarding entrance requirements, please email ndadvise@bastyr.edu.

Application requirements for the naturopathic medicine program will be the same at both campuses.

Bastyr Announces San Diego Location for Second Campus

It's official: Bastyr University has announced its new campus will be in San Diego, California, with the first class to begin in fall 2012.

The news comes as an exciting step forward for the University, which is pleased to be expanding and growing in a difficulty economy. After months of scouting, planning and research, the decision means prospective students and University leaders alike can prepare for the inaugural class next fall.

"We are thrilled to secure a location for our Southern California campus," says President Daniel K. Church, PhD. "To become the first regionally accredited naturopathic medical institution in California is a tremendous honor, and we look forward to providing the same quality education as our Kenmore, Washington, campus does."

The San Diego campus will be located at 4106 Sorrento Valley Boulevard in the center of the city's life sciences cluster and approximately 14 miles north of downtown. It lies within walking distance of the San Diego Coaster commuter train (which connects to more light-rail lines), and is within a short drive of the University of California-San Diego, Scripps Mercy Hospital and the VA San Diego Medical Center. Less than 6 miles away, the coastal wilderness at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve presents some of the area's most popular surfing and hiking spots.

California Eager for Naturopaths to Fill Primary Care Shortage

When Bastyr University opens its San Diego campus next fall, it will be California’s only naturopathic medicine higher-education institution.

Which is quite surprising, really.

Californians hold a high level of interest in integrative medicine, as University leaders learned through their market research. The Golden State has a keen shortage of primary care physicians, an opportunity that could be filled by naturopathic doctors. And the state is one of 16 to license naturopathic doctors (NDs) to practice as primary care professionals (thanks in part to the University's advocacy to the 2003 state Legislature). Plus, California has 37 million residents — and the eighth largest economy in the world.

What Programs Will be Offered?

We will offer the naturopathic doctoral program alone at first, with hopes to add additional programs, including nutrition, in the next several years. The San Diego campus will be open to first-year students only; transfer students may apply to study at the Kenmore, Washington, campus.

High Demand in California for Naturopathic Doctors

Why is Bastyr University Deciding to Do This Now?

University officials have monitored the potential need for a naturopathic medical school in California for many years, and we recently gained the support of the California Naturopathic Doctors Association (CNDA). The University and the CNDA have agreed that Bastyr is the academic institution best positioned to fill the demand for a naturopathic medical school in the region.
There's a shortage of primary care doctors in California (and throughout the country) and, since naturopaths are licensed to practice as primary care physicians in California, the University's presence will help meet this need.

Prerequisites, Enrollment Process Unchanged

I am considering enrolling at Bastyr in 2012 or 2013. Do I need to do anything different if I prefer the San Diego campus?

The prerequisites and enrollment process will be the same between the two campuses. If there is anything unique that prospective California students need to do, they will be advised through the Office of Admissions and through University newsletters. At this time, they can proceed as normal, and we will keep them posted at regular intervals.

Transferring Not Available to Current Bastyr Students

Will Current Bastyr Students Be Able to Transfer to San Diego in 2012?

Students will not be able to transfer to the San Diego campus after beginning the program in Kenmore, Washington, because those students would be starting or would be already involved in clinical training.

Curriculum Will Be Identical at Both Campuses

Will the Curriculum Be the Same?

Curriculum and instruction in San Diego will be identical to what is offered at our Kenmore campus, providing the same high-quality faculty and educational experience for all our Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine students, regardless of location. No On-Campus Housing, Food Services

Will There Be Housing or Food Services?
